How to measure, how much drop to allow, and exactly which size fits your table, with charts for every shape.
Measure your table, decide how far you want the cloth to hang (the drop), then add twice the drop to each measurement. For most dining tables, a drop of 10 to 12 inches looks right. A 6-seat table of about 72 x 40 inches takes a 90 x 60 inch cloth (a 9- to 10-inch drop), an 8-seat table of 84 x 40 inches takes 108 x 60 (10 to 12 inches), and a 60-inch round table takes a 90-inch round (15 inches).
That is the short version. The charts below cover every common table, from a small square bistro table to a long holiday table, so you can find your size in one look.
First, measure your table
For a rectangle or square table, measure the length and the width of the top. For a round table, measure straight across the middle, which is the diameter. For an oval table, measure the length and the width at the widest points.
Measure with any leaves you plan to use. If you want a cloth that reaches the floor, also measure the height from the floor to the tabletop; most dining tables are about 29 to 30 inches tall.

Then choose your drop
The drop is how far the cloth hangs below the edge of the table. A shorter drop is practical for everyday meals; a longer drop looks dressier.
Drop length guide
| Drop | The look | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| 6 to 8 in | Casual | Everyday meals, kitchen tables, homes with small children |
| 10 to 12 in | Standard | Most dining tables and dinner parties |
| 13 to 15 in | Formal | Holidays, celebrations and special dinners |
| About 29 to 30 in | Floor-length | Buffets, weddings, events and side tables |
Seated guests are most comfortable with a drop of about 15 inches or less, so knees are not tangled in fabric.
The simple tablecloth formula
For a rectangle or square: tablecloth length = table length + (2 x drop), and tablecloth width = table width + (2 x drop).
For a round table: tablecloth diameter = table diameter + (2 x drop).
For example, a 72 x 40 inch table with a 10-inch drop needs about 92 x 60 inches. Our closest size is 90 x 60, which gives a 9-inch drop at the ends and 10 inches on the sides.

| 108 x 42 in | 10 | 120 x 60 in (6 / 9 in) | 140 x 72 in (16 / 15 in) |
| 120 x 44 in | 10 to 12 | 140 x 72 in (10 / 14 in) | — |
| 144 x 44 in | 12 to 14 | 160 x 72 in (8 / 14 in) | — |

Square tablecloth sizes
Square tables are simple: add twice the drop to one side. Our square cloths come in 54 x 54 and 60 x 60 inches.
Square tables
| Table size | Seats (about) | Tablecloth | Drop |
|---|---|---|---|
| 30 x 30 in | 2 | 54 x 54 in | 12 in |
| 30 x 30 in | 2 | 60 x 60 in | 15 in |
| 36 x 36 in | 4 | 54 x 54 in | 9 in |
| 36 x 36 in | 4 | 60 x 60 in | 12 in |
| 42 x 42 in | 4 | 60 x 60 in | 9 in |
| 48 x 48 in | 4 to 8 | 60 x 60 in | 6 in |
Most card and game tables are about 34 to 36 inches square, so a 54 x 54 or 60 x 60 inch cloth fits them well.
For a longer drop on a large square table, try a round cloth. A 90-inch round on a 48-inch square table hangs about 21 inches at the sides and about 11 inches at the corners, softening the shape.
Round tablecloth sizes
Round cloths are sized by diameter. Ours come in 60, 90, 110, 120 and 132 inches, which covers everything from a bistro table to a floor-length banquet round.
Round tables
| Table diameter | Seats (about) | Everyday fit | Longer drop | To the floor |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 30 in | 2 | 60 in (15 in drop) | — | 90 in (30 in) |
| 36 in | 2 to 4 | 60 in (12 in) | — | 90 in (27 in) |
| 42 in | 4 | 60 in (9 in) | 90 in (24 in) | — |
| 48 in | 4 to 6 | 60 in (6 in) | 90 in (21 in) | 110 in (31 in) |
| 54 in | 6 | — | 90 in (18 in) | 110 in (28 in) |
| 60 in | 6 to 8 | 90 in (15 in) | — | 120 in (30 in) |
| 72 in | 8 to 10 | 90 in (9 in) | 110 in (19 in) | 132 in (30 in) |
Floor-length assumes a table about 29 to 30 inches tall. Drops longer than about 15 inches suit buffets and side tables better than seated dinners.

Oval tables
Use a rectangle tablecloth on an oval table. Measure the length and width at the widest points and size it like a rectangle. The corners of the cloth will hang a little lower at the curved ends, which looks natural on an oval.
Oval tables
| Table size | Tablecloth | Drop (ends / sides) |
|---|---|---|
| 72 x 42 in | 90 x 60 in | 9 / 9 in |
| 72 x 42 in | 102 x 60 in | 15 / 9 in |
| 84 x 44 in | 108 x 70 in | 12 / 13 in |
| 96 x 44 in | 118 x 70 in | 11 / 13 in |
Ruffle tablecloths also suit oval tables, because the ruffle softens the corners.
Floor-length and event tablecloths
For buffets, weddings and side tables, let the cloth fall to the floor. Add twice the table height to the diameter: a 60-inch round table about 30 inches tall needs about 120 inches, and a 72-inch round needs about 132 inches.
For a layered event look, put a floor-length cloth underneath and a shorter round or square on top. Our wedding table guide covers event planning in more detail.

Table runner sizes
A runner usually hangs 6 to 12 inches past each end of the table. For a cleaner look, choose one a little shorter than the table so it stops on the tabletop.
Our runners are 16 inches wide, which suits most dining tables about 36 to 48 inches wide.
Table runners
| Runner | Table length (6 to 12 in overhang each end) |
|---|---|
| 16 x 70 in | 46 to 58 in |
| 16 x 90 in | 66 to 78 in |
| 16 x 106 in | 82 to 94 in |

Between two sizes, let the drop decide
If your table falls between two sizes, the smaller one works for everyday meals as long as the drop is at least 6 inches. For a dressier table, choose the larger one, keeping the drop at about 15 inches or less where people sit.
Each product page lists the sizes that design comes in. To keep a cloth at its best, wash it on a gentle cold cycle as our product care instructions recommend.

What size tablecloth fits a 60-inch round table?
A 90-inch round tablecloth gives a 15-inch drop. For a cloth that reaches the floor, choose 120 inches.
What size tablecloth fits an 8-seat table?
Most 8-seat tables are about 84 x 40 inches. A 108 x 60 inch tablecloth gives a 12-inch drop at the ends and 10 inches on the sides.
Can I use a rectangle tablecloth on an oval table?
Yes. Measure the oval at its longest and widest points, then choose a rectangle using the same formula. The corners will hang a little lower at the ends.
What size tablecloth fits a card or mahjong table?
Most card tables are about 34 to 36 inches square. A 54 x 54 inch cloth gives a drop of about 9 to 10 inches, and a 60 x 60 inch cloth about 12 to 13 inches.
Why our tablecloths come in so many sizes
We make our tablecloths in 14 rectangle and square sizes, from 54 x 54 to 190 x 72 inches, and five rounds, from 60 to 132 inches. That range means most tables, from a bistro corner to a 16-seat holiday table, can get a cloth that fits.
